Need Cheap Tickets to Europe? Here’s how.

Winter is definitely the time to travel to Europe. Airfares are lower, so are hotels. Another way to  bring prices down is to go somewhere else than Paris and London. Try Spain, Portugal, Russia. If you’re willing to brave the weather, Northern European countries are a great place to go.

If last summers’s price hikes are any indication of 2013, travel from June to September just might be out of your reach.

For example:  In Mid-January the average round-trip nonstop fares from Los Angeles International Airport to London’s Heathrow and Paris’ Charles de Gaulle was $877 on several airlines. One fare on May 7  returning on  May 14 was as low as $919. And August? $1,268 for an Aug. 6-13 trip.

Know this:

Sundays through Thursdays generally are the least expensive days to depart for Europe, and Mondays through Thursdays are the cheapest days to return. An exception is England, where Mondays through Wednesdays are the cheapest days for both departures and returns. Weekend surcharges can be as much as $40 higher each way.

Think outside the box:

If  you’re flexible about destinations, consider Berlin; Dublin, Ireland; or Istanbul, Turkey. Check this out:  round-trip Berlin fares for Aug. 6-13 show up as low as $809 on United (two stops) and $812 and $813 for one stop  on Lufthansa and United.

Summer fares to Dublin were running less than $1,100 for one-stop service. For Istanbul, they were $1,029. Get the picture.

Timing:

Traveling to Europe during the last two weeks of May and the first couple of weeks of June? Sales happen, but often not until April. So just wait to buy your tickets. If you want tickets to Europe in peak July or August, buy no later than February. I always say this because peak fares probably won’t drop, but they might—and probably will—go up.

Package deals:

group tour anyone?

group tour anyone?

Package deals are a great idea because the fares are locked in so you are protected  if you buy in advance. Same is true of hotel rates, which often are guaranteed months before you leave. Once you’ve booked you’re done, case closed. No more worrying!

But if group tours aren’t your thing, remember that you might be able to get the prices without having to participate in the group tours.

Music to my ears.

Keep checking fares with us at www.fareboom.com and be sure to book your summer travel as soon as possible. I know it’s hard, but it’s worth it.
