Eat Like a Pig

So many of you ask, what’s the best thing to do in autumn. And I have one answer: Eat. And the best place to eat in autumn? Piedmont, where my in-laws live. Believe it or not, here summer is not the high-season, it’s now, when the truffles come out, the wine is ready and the cheese is ripe. In this city in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy, they take gastronomy very seriously.

Michelin-starred restaurants lurk around every street corner. The Slow Food movement, which champions the use of local produce and time-honored cooking techniques, has its headquarters in the nearby town of Bra.

The fall is also the season of Barolo, the great wine produced in hillside vineyards from a cluster of villages southwest of Alba: La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d’Alba, Monforte d’Alba and Barolo itself. As truffle season arrives, so do the autumn mists that are said to have given the late-harvested Barolo grape variety, nebbiolo, its name. (“Nebbia” means fog in Italian.)

But the main attraction, what brings people here from all over the world, are the white truffles. For a few weeks in October and November, these amazing funghi, unearthed from the forests around Alba by old men with specially trained dogs, are sold in a market in the old city center. There, the truffles are prodded, sniffed and haggled over before changing hands at diamond prices.

So book your flights, check out the listed hotels and book your weekend getaway because from October 6th till November 18th Alba, in Piedmont, Northern Italy, will host the White Truffle Fair.

And just take a look at some of these hotels. They are mostly, if not all, restructured barns, castles, vast villas. They are absolutely, unbelievably beautiful and your experience here will feel like the perfect combination of country and city. Is it cheap?  Hell, nothing that lasts a lifetime ever is. And this trip will.

This is the place just down the road from my in-laws. In the heart of Alba area, the luxury rooms and the romantic and delicious restaurant – all white truffle based – makes it a perfect get away for two. An example of what’s on the menu – Open Truffle Ravioli with Quail, sauteed Foie Gras & Truffle Ragu & 5 grams of fresh white Truffles, Piemontese Sirloin Steak with Truffle Sauce & fresh shaved White Truffles, Potato Porcini Gratin, Wilted Spinach with currants & Pine Nuts, Grand Manier & White Truffle Souffle’ with Chocolate & Rum Raisin Gelato.

Also don’t miss the fair, it’s so much fun to see people haggling, sniffing, snorting and licking these underground ‘shrooms. Just ask for the Market of Alba White Truffle. A fun way to tour the region? By bike. Or for you lazier people out there by vespa.
