Cheap Flights to Santiago- it’s happening!

Chile is becoming very hot, or cool or however you want to say it these days. Patagonia is a wine lover’s dream, we’ve done blogs on that, and also the hip little beaches that go along with this very laid back place that attracts hippies and millionaires alike.

And now the city of Santiago is showing just how hip the rest of the word thinks it is. Yep, book a cheap flight to Santiago and join the trendsetters in the big name hotels like W and new Patagonian powerhouses like the Singular Hotel and Tierra Patagonia. But half the charm of a place like this is discovering the smaller, more individual jewels set in a nature you can only describe as raw.

In Santiago

Lastarria Hotel

Lastarria Hotel

The 12-room Lastarria Hotel (from $190 per night) opened in Santiago last year inside an old French colonial-style 1920s mansion. Some aspects of the hotel — like a grand white marble staircase and original oak flooring — have been beautifully restored. But there are new additions, too, like a small backyard pool surrounded by flowering trees, which is a great place to have a drink in the evening (the hotel doesn’t have a liquor license, so it’s b.y.o.). You can also take a walk through trendy Lastarria, a Santiago neighborhood packed with lively bars, new galleries and cheap restaurants.

The Aubrey

The Aubrey

The Aubrey (doubles from $240) still seems like the coolest hotel in Santiago. Located in the always fun  Bellavista neighborhood, expanding its room count to 15 last year when it opened four poolside pavilion suites, each with private terraces. The 4 p.m. tapas happy hour in the hotel’s stone-paved courtyard is one of the best hangouts in town, as is the new restaurant, the Dining Room, which opened in January and serves excellent homemade pastas and ceviches.

Offshore: Easter and Robinson Crusoe Islands

One of the main attractions in this part of the world, is, of course, Easter Island. And getting to Easter Island is fairly simple. (LAN flies there from Lima, Peru, and Santiago several times per week.) The hard part is finding thoughtfully designed accommodation on this fragile and fast eroding isle. Until the Hangaroa Eco Village & Spa (doubles from $316 per person) opened earlier this year.

Hanga Rioa

Hanga Rioa

This oceanfront eco-resort is located just outside the small fishing and tourist village of Hanga Roa. The hotel makes its own energy and clean water, is a complex of interconnected black circular buildings with grass planted domed roofs  modeled after the island’s ancient Orongo Village. The 75 rooms are finished with polished porphyry detailing, and is lit here and there by skylights.

People are still coming to Chile’s Robinson Crusoe Island despite the frequently delayed or canceled flights due to bad weather or high winds. But if you can make the two-hour flight and 30-minute boat ride to this stunning nature preserve, you must stay at the new 15-room Crusoe Island Lodge (all-inclusive doubles from $330). The wood and stone construction makes this hotel feel like the best treehouse ever. The outdoor wooden hot tub on the edge of a sea cliff doesn’t hurt romance either. The resort leads island excursions like lobster fishing jaunts and ship-wreck dives in glittery Cumberland Bay. This is a majorly cool place to take the woman in your life and so worth the cheap tickets to Santiago.

Other hot spots  people are talking about in Chile

Hotel Antumalal

Hotel Antumalal

The Hotel Antumalal (doubles from $358) on Lake Villarrica is a masterpiece of modern architecture, dating from the 1940s. The Pollak family, which still owns it, hired a disciple of Frank Lloyd Wright to design the guest rooms, chalets, lounges, bar and restaurant, which are clad in beech wood paneling, unpolished cement and walls of massive cantilevered windows. The original elements of the hotel like six-foot fireplaces in the bar and lounge areas, and small wood burning stoves in each guest room are as charming as ever. A 2011 addition of the Antumaco Spa, which was built around a mossy mountainside and waterfalls, hits the same Modernist design notes: clean cement walls, enormous fireplaces and glass walls. The restaurant, an institution with PucĂłn locals for its food and its fabulous view of Lake Villarrica, serves hearty stews, locally raised beef and organic vegetables from the cute greenhouse on its 10 acres of private park land. It looks like Nirvana to me, a perfect marriage of nature and man, book your tickets to Santiago to see this for yourself, I think this is how the better half lives.

Alto Atacama Desert Lodge and Spa

Alto Atacama Desert Lodge and Spa

The Alto Atacama Desert Lodge and Spa (doubles from $220 per person) is a stunning otherworldly achievement. I wish some of the architects out here in Arizona and California would take a few cues from these guys. Built in 2007  in Chile’s Atacama Desert, the 32-room resort, isolated in a quiet desert ravine outside the tiny town of San Pedro, is expanding its offerings with a new Chilean and Mediterranean restaurant that always booked. There are also 10 new guest rooms with outdoor solariums and private terraces that overlook the red rock mountains and plains of pampas grass.

So there you have it, if you happen to be in South America, or even live there, fly to Santiago and see what’s happening there. All too often we emphasis the bad, but really there is so much good. And if you’re looking for a getaway, there’s no more diverse, no more adventurous place to go-check out our cheap flights to Santiago chile and feel alive again. I know I want to.
