Could you be silent for five days?

Many years ago at a Buddhist retreat, I tried it and I must say I hated it. With a passion. I was young and wanted to talk, to smoke, drink, have sex with the monks.

But now I am older and don’t smoke or drink or have sex. So spirituality seems like a good plan and what better way to get spiritual than hop on a cheap flight to Bangalore or Mumbai?

Now there’s a few reasons why this is a good idea:

  1. If you can’t talk no one knows how far down on the spiritual ladder you are.
  2. If the people are lame you do not have to talk to them.
  3. You do not have to pretend you get it.

But hear me out:

There’s no way I’m going to a shit hole. No offense but I believe that spirituality, silent or otherwise, must be rewarded. The pious must be rewarded. I mean the pope’s not slumming it.

There’s a place in Bangalore, India where you can get both.  It’s called Shreyas and the goal is to live an ashram style life (daily yoga, meditation sessions, chanting classes, organic vegetarian food, a no-alcohol policy, community service, farming etc.) in private, serene and “simply” luxurious accommodation and facilities.

In a typical Yoga Retreat, guests practice different facets of Yoga – for physical strength, balance and flexibility, for physiological & therapeutic benefits and if they are interested, for pursuing a spiritual path through various types of meditation.

The cool thing about this place is just how relaxing it is. Start your day by waking up in one of the poolside cottages, having a breakfast of fresh fruit and yogurt before starting an open-air yoga pavilion for your morning group Yoga session. The Hatha Yoga and Ashtanga Vinyasa sessions, deep relaxation, meditation and breathing processes practiced at Shreyas are customized to your level of experience, interest and competence.

You can opt to swim in the infinity-edge 25 meter lap pool or simply sun-bathe around it with a book from our extensive library. The temperature of the pool varies from 70 to 0 degrees depending on the weather.

There are beautiful temples, lakes and forests not too far from the boutique retreat and we can direct/escort you to them. Picnic lunches can also be arranged on request.

An activity that our guests have really enjoyed is spending time on rice paddy, agricultural and herb gardens, where you get an opportunity to get your hands and feet dirty and truly commune with nature. Feel your stresses disappear as you become one with nature.

Some of you may prefer to visit the city of Bangalore which is great especially when you have a car and driver!

In the afternoon you can rest, read, watch a movie or hang by the pool. The  garden cottages and poolside cottages are air conditioned, and  garden cottages have an open bathroom that leads into your own private courtyard. Take books from the  library to your room and spend the afternoon reading in your private veranda.

Night transforms Shreyas. Candles, soothing music in the background, the water in the infinity pool lights to courtyard and the food is as fresh and fragrant as the garden,  with  local delicacies like “tandoori” (clay baked) cuisine all made from ingredients organically grown and freshly picked from our fields. For desert try eggless chocolate cake, cream tarts and various Indian delicacies.

They also have a state of the art home theater with over 500 movies which you can see from “lazy boy” chairs, a cup of tea and the sweet hum of the air conditioning.

But I’m planning on taking it one step further. I want to do it all without talking.

I’m getting the “Shhhhhreyas” badge which basically means do not talk to me.

Day 2 – Day 5 (4 days) are spent in silence.

They say that spending time in solitary contemplation can bring deep-seated emotional, intellectual or spiritual issues to the fore. Yikes.

The meals during the retreat are also specially customized and prepared with ingredients that are known to calm the mind and are easy to digest. The ingredients for the meals are freshly hand-picked from our organic vegetable and herb gardens, and all preparations are light and nutritious. According to ayurveda, self-imposed mouna during eating greatly aids digestion and improves overall health.

Day 6 marks the end of the ‘Mouna’ part of the Retreat, then there’s an interactive session with  wellness consultants to discuss  your experience of the past 4 days. On Day 6 and 7, you can spend it talking to the guests you actually want to talk to.

For my next trip I’m checking the cheap flights to Delhi, is it possible to find peace there?
