Flights to Munich-My one true love

munich airport

I am here to simply sing the praises of our flights to Munich via Lufthansa. Talk about a well-oiled machine and what a difference it makes to fly into an airport like Munich rather than, well, just about any other airport in the world. In fact it’s been voted one of the best airports in the world six times and Europe’s best. This award was given to them based on  11 million passengers from more than 100 countries and 240 airports.

When we hear all these statistics, our eyes roll back in our heads usually, they’re just meaningless to the average Joe such as myself. But let me tell you how an airport makes such a difference in the lives of every day people: It prevents them from slashing their wrists.

We had a single hour to catch our international flight from Munich to LA or else we would have to sleep in Munich, wait for another flight to come up with 6 empty seats to LA on the first weekend of August when just about every human being and dog goes on vacation. We’d probably end up just getting jobs at the airport or at least finally enslaving the kids to sell gum there while we “waited” at the bar for the end of August. But it was either that or wake up at 5 and have a five hour lay-over in Munich with the kids.

Me, being the ever hopeful dumb American, opted for the “oh, we’ll make it, come on!” approach. My old man from the old country rolled his eyes and told me he’d blame me if and when we got stuck.

Anyway, after dropping a good 28 Euros at the new fancy crepe and yogurt bar at the Turin Airport, we boarded our Air Dolomiti flight right on time. Air Dolomiti is run by Lufthansa and is fantastic. From the multi-lingual, kind, kid-liking, attentive staff that handed out the coolest wooden color pencils, coloring book, pencil sharpener, stickers all inside its very own plastic shark pouch, to water when the plane was hot and we were DELAYED to major information to all onboard, this is one top-notch commuter plane. It blows the US right out of the water. These women are not only super hot they are also smart.

Back to the DELAYED business. Yep. The plane was delayed on the tarmac for 15 minutes. “All your names and connecting flight information has already been sent to Munich, they are aware.”

Me, dumb, scared American: “We’re gonna miss our flight home!!!!”

Sensing that I was about to jump, she informed me that the entire airport was shut down. She pointed outside and showed me that we’d been circling for the past half hour because of a storm. “No flights can come or go.”

‘Not even international?”

“No.”

When we landed there was a car waiting to drive us directly to the gate. Just us and two other people were whisked away by an airport official (very German and studly) and brought through passport control and led to the gate on onto the plane all so VIP, though we were just economy. Just us. It was pretty incredible. I asked my husband what would have happened had this happened in Milan.

He laughed and was like really? They wouldn’t even know we were supposed to be on it. Even had we gone through Frankfurt we would have lost the connection. At Munich they are just that organized, that calm and efficient.

But the flight, my God is it long coming back. The Lufthansa staff is clean, efficient, helpful. it runs so well. The food is semi-edible, with lots of vegetarian options. Movies not bad either, though we’d already seen most of them. Some German passengers aren’t quite as nice as their staff. This one wanker kept complaining of my daughter’s headphones saying there was just so much noise coming out! He complained of my son’s ipad as well. I felt so sorry for his wife.

LAX magic

And again at LAX, the Lufthansa staff rose to the challenge. When I couldn’t find the stroller at the gate or at baggage, a member of the flight went back up to the plane to find it for us. Then we couldn’t find our son’s car seat, he went and found it for us. Can you imagine someone from United or American doing that? Hell no! They’d scratch your eyes out with their French tips before they went back up to the plane after a 14 hour flight.

And when we walked out into the night sky, the neon lights and the smell of french fries and possibility, the children were so happy to be home. And so was I. There’s just something about LA, I don’t know what it is that makes you happy to touch its soil. But it’s there, so palpable even the children feel it. I can see it in their eyes.

But what an experience. On our last day, after our son came home from the hospital, we all got on my husband’s uncle’s sailboat and went up and down the Ligurian coast. The kids jumped off the boat, munched on foccacia while my husband, his parents and beloved uncle, watched on. I knew what they were all thinking. How great is life? How great is it to see the change, the generations aboard and remember how it was back 40 years ago when they would go out on this boat and they we all so young. Now my husband was a father, they were grandfathers  and grandmothers and the coast was still as it always was: Simply beautiful.
