Fly to Rome-have a great italian holiday with your kids!

Why are there so many cheap flights to Rome? Because seeing Rome with your kids is essential. It’s also a great exercise in letting go. I think I’ve pretty much climbed up a few rings in the old mandala, if you know what I mean.

First things first: Thank you Crowne Plaza Hotel for a breakfast that kicked ass. Now I don’t want to seem like an old American horribly set in her ways, but there’s just something nice about excess. As in:

Walk into the restaurant at 8 am sharp and find a huge round table big enough for 12 ready and waiting. And then the piece de resistance the all-you-can-eat buffet. Man oh man it was better than standing before a Botticelli. Troughs of freshly cooked eggs, silver trays of meats, cheese, warm croissants, yogurt, cereal, blood orange juice and best of all, all the coffee I could ever ask for!

Yeah! Breakfast!

Yeah! Breakfast!

Ah! Nirvana. Under threat of never seeing another Autogrill for the rest of their miserable lives, I told them to eat as much as they wanted, to overeat, to feast like a Roman.

“I’m not that hungry,” was the reply I got. Of course.

Off we went to the Vatican. Now, our plan was succinct. After the afternoon before where we were all exhausted and miserable we thought we’d just hop into the city, marvel at the Sistine Chapel,  take a look at the crypts of popes and then take the bus back. We were eager, we were strong, the kids had a great night sleep. We were pumped.

The day could not have been more beautiful either. We hopped off the (free!!!) bus, walked the underpass, passed the gypsies and entered the realm of St. Peters. Wow, it’s monumentally huge.

“Jesus Christ!” My daughter said.

“Dude you can’t talk like that here!” I said.

‘That’s the line.” She said pointing.

“Jesus Christ.” I said.

At 9 am on a Sunday while the Pope was away at his summer residence of Castel Gondolfo, the line to enter was already all the way around the square (which is enormous) to form an almost perfect circle.

There’s no way. No way we’d make the bus back to the hotel in time for check-out and no way that the children could wait in a line so ungodly.  One of my son’s refused to stand up, so he sat in the middle of the  square like a gypsy. I felt like giving him a cup to beg for Autogrill money.

The other one kept screaming “I hate it here!” So we took an extremely quick look at all the incredible statues of saints that line the Vatican and hit the gift shop. As we waited for the bus back, I had my husband download info on the Vatican so I could read about the place where I just was but COULD NOT SEE!!!

I remembered seeing the Sistine chapel when I was a kid and it blew my mind. But you know what? They didn’t care. Except for the older one, and you can’t make them. There’s only so much pushing up the hill you can do to make young kids appreciate old things, things that mean a lot to us.

In the bus, we were the only ones going back which depressed me, but the kids thought was cool. All the wanted was to get into the pool. And I understood. The bus driver told me though, and this is an important bit of info for all you people out there who want to go to Rome.

There’s a sign MEETING POINT where you can have a guide and for 5 Euros each you can skip the entire line and go into the Vatican with a guide. You say your hotel sent you.  and you SKIP the ENTIRE line. I swear my heart broke just a little when he told me that.

I would have loved to see the Sistine Chapel and loved even more to see that look in my children’s  eyes of deep appreciation for something so much bigger than themselves.

But I guess that will have to wait. And also I guess, that perhaps it’s also part of the lesson.

It is the can someone write my dissertation for me second most important public higher education institution in the city, after the national university of colombia, with a population of 26,140 students
