Staying thin in Rome

Staying thin in Rome

Q: My husband found these ridiculously cheap tickets to Rome, and surprised the whole family with a spring trip for a week. The thing is summer’s just around the corner and we’re supposed to go to Greece on a boat, which means full bathing suit exposure. I’ve been on a pretty strict diet for the past month and I really don’t want to blow it. And I really want to go to Rome with the kids. Do you have any good tips for staying thin that don’t include exercising in a hotel gym or waking up at the crack of dawn and running?

A: Yes, PUT THE FORK DOWN. That about sums up the answer to your question. That’s all you need to do is eat less. It’s not easy, I know. I’m the kind of traveler who sees and feels the place through food, I gained 10 pounds in India, five in Thailand and one in Bali. Food is the window to the soul of a country and restaurants and cafes should not be missed, they’re the pulse of  the city. BUT getting fatter and fatter while traveling is not good for your soul, so how do you do both?

All it takes is a little mindfulness AND less carbs of course.  So here it is your question and our answer. The top 7 ways to stay healthy (code for not gaining weight) while traveling to Rome.

1.     No carbs past lunch.  I know, in Rome, staying away from carbs is like asking you to not breathe, it’s not realistic AND it’s not a good way to enjoy life. But carbs are what make you feel like going back to bed in the morning. In most hotels in Rome and in most bars, breakfast consists of cappuccinos, jam filled croissants and panini. Don’t get hung up on the fat content of the milk, BUT stay away from the croissants. Opt for a panini and remove the top piece of bread. The choices are usually mozzarella, tomato and lettuce, ham, and fritatta. They are usually very small. Small is what keep Italians the thinnest people in Europe. SMALL. Think Small.  Which brings me to #2.

2.     Portions. Think No larger than your fist. If it’s larger than your fist, use your knife to excise the part you don’t want ending up on your thighs. Follow this rule for all meals and will win all around. You will get to eat what you want AND not feel uncomfortable. Italy is a perfect place to learn this trick, Italians do it naturally. Watch their portions. When I first moved there, I could not believe how many women sat and ate three course meals. And they were thinner than all the gym obsessed Californians I’d ever seen.  How? Portions and Purity.

3.     Purity. Eat clean food. Sound hard? It’s not. It means no cream sauce. No fried foods.

4.     Don’t deny yourself. But don’t splurge every day. Desert every other day. And notice portions here, see how small they are?

5.     No snacking between meals. This is where going on vacation actually works in your favor. NO sitting in front of the television, dipping in the fridge, you actually have to walk to eat, you must sit, portions are controlled.

6.     Make dinner vegetables, fish or chicken, avoid all rice and pasta and bread.

7.     Walk after dinner.
